Abstract. Numerous correlational studies indicate that the musical aptitude of students learning an additional language (AL) is related to their reading skills. However, research on how this relationship affects adults in migration contexts, who are non-literate or have low literacy levels, learning an additional languageis still scarce. This literature review aims to ascertain the state of the art regarding the acoustic dimension of the reading process and to synthesize findings surrounding the relationship between musical rhythm and the acquisition of reading skills for the design of future research. To this end, a systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA protocol. The results show the existence of a relationship between musical rhythm and reading skills, mediated by phonological awareness and auditory working memory, which would have implications for learning to read in an additional language among migrant adults.
