Abstract. Over the past two decades, technological innovations have profoundly transformed the educational landscape, introducing digital tools and platforms that alter learning dynamics and demand appropriate support from both families and teachers. Based on data from the 2018 PISA report, this quantitative research examines how the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs), as well as social media, impacts the academic performance of adolescents in Spain in fundamental subjects such as reading, mathematics, and science. Using a novel statistical methodology focused on the selection of specific variables, the findings indicate that excessive consumption of these digital resources, both on weekdays and weekends, negatively affects academic performance. Furthermore, this detrimental impact is more pronounced among male students, a phenomenon associated with an earlier start in using these technologies and a greater tendency to use them for leisure activities such as online video games.
